Gov. Edwards turns to UL Lafayette to open special session

Breaking from tradition, Gov. John Bel Edwards opened the latest Louisiana special session in the heart of Acadiana at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, one of the several college campuses threatened with budget cuts.
Instead of speaking to lawmakers in the House chamber, he addressed a crowd at Earl K. Long Gym on campus.
Edwards's proposed budget plan includes retaining $648 million of the $1.4 billion in expiring revenue and fully funding partner hospitals, higher education, TOPS, and critical health care services for seniors and those with disabilities.
"We must do better because it's your healthcare, your hospitals, your the food on your table, your TOPS, your college education," Edwards stated. "This isn't about me. This is about all of us. This is about our Louisiana."
