Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research or Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Training, previously required for undergraduates, graduate students and post-docs, is now required for investigators and senior/key personnel on grant awards.

Personnel have one year from receipt of the award or joining the research team to complete the training.  UL Lafayette offers training via the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI).  Information regarding the training can be found on the RCR webpage or by contacting Robin Broussard (robin.broussard@louisiana.edu or 482-1419).

Upcoming in 2025, The CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 requires institutions certify that individuals receiving Federal awards have completed research security training (Sec. 10634.(a)(1)(B)).  According to Sec. 10634(c)(1)(A), the training must include:

• cybersecurity,
• international collaboration and international travel,
• foreign interference, and
• rules for proper use of funds,
• disclosure,
• conflict of commitment, and
• conflict of interest.

It is expected that the 2025 Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG) will require senior/key personnel to complete Research Security Training within one year of the Research & Development application or within one year of joining the research team for those who join after the award is made.  NSF recommends renewing the training annually.

UL Lafayette CITI training subscription contains a course, “Research Security Training,” that meets the requirements of the CHIPS and Science Act.  If employees already have an account in CITI, at the bottom of the page, use the Add a Course” link to select the course from question 11.  If you need to set up a CITI account, instructions can be found on the Research Integrity Office Online Training website.

All faculty and senior research staff intending to apply for federal funding are encouraged to complete this training as soon as possible to minimize the impact when applying for Federal funding. The training is also highly recommended for graduate students and post-docs, because it reviews many situations important for protecting their research when attending conferences and interacting with people not directly involved in their research projects.
