The Office of Innovation Management was launched to provide a full spectrum of IP services to faculty, students, staff and, to the larger community. The Office of Innovation Management manages copyrightable and patentable subject matter. The Office of Innovation Management also helps protect innovations through the appropriate use of trademark and know-how protections. In fact, we often find that IP may benefit from multiple forms of protection.

The Office of Innovation Management has experience in virtually hundreds of successful License negotiations (with domestic and international organizations). The Office of Innovation Management is charged to deliver new discoveries to organizations that are committed to deliver the product to the marketplace.

Yes. The University may take equity in a company as part of the consideration for the license–usually in lieu of up-front licensing fees. Typically, equity deals are associated with licensing to start-up companies that to preserve cash for operations. We understand these needs and, are prepared to make the necessary accommodations to ensure that strong companies are launched through the Office of Innovation Management.

The typical License (whether from “company to company” or “university to company”) includes; a license initiation fee (or equity), a running royalty on sales, a minimum royalty and, recovery of patent costs.

Software can be licensed for commercial use, for non-commercial or academic use and may be released simultaneously under several different types of licenses. In some cases, an evaluation copy of the software can be provided on a trial basis with a key code that disables the software at the end of the evaluation period.
