The Office of Innovation Management was launched to provide a full spectrum of IP services to faculty, students, staff and, to the larger community. The Office of Innovation Management manages copyrightable and patentable subject matter. The Office of Innovation Management also helps protect innovations through the appropriate use of trademark and know-how protections. In fact, we often find that IP may benefit from multiple forms of protection.

Do you license to start-up companies?

Yes. Often, the best partner to develop and market a technology is a new company. The Office of Innovation Management works to structure the License with emerging companies to reduce risk and optimize returns from all. Often, these terms include a minimal license initiation fee, a “royalty holiday” for several years and reduced milestone payments. We understand that sometimes, a start-up company may be able to move the technology further down the developmental continuum so that it can be commercialized, licensed by a company with a franchise in the market.

Does the University ever take equity as part of the license?

Yes. The University may take equity in a company as part of the consideration for the license–usually in lieu of up-front licensing fees. Typically, equity deals are associated with licensing to start-up companies that to preserve cash for operations. We understand these needs and, are prepared to make the necessary accommodations to ensure that strong companies are launched through the Office of Innovation Management.

Does the University sell intellectual property rights?

Over the past 30 years, American universities have transferred IP rights to new and existing companies virtually hundreds of thousands of times. In virtually every case, those rights were transferred through exclusive or non-exclusive licenses. Still, in certain cases, an assignment (a “sale”) of rights is appropriate and the Office of Innovation Management has extensive experience in these matters.
