Export Controls Training

Export controls training is required for University personnel who work with export-controlled items, technology, software, technical data, equipment, materials, hardware, or other restricted research-related information.

The University provides online export controls training through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program). As part of the training process, personnel should also review the University’s Export Control Policy and Export Compliance Procedure Manual. 

Who Should Complete Export Controls Training?

  • Export controls training may be required for faculty, staff, students, visiting researchers, research personnel, or other University-affiliated individuals whose activities involve:
  • Export-controlled technology, software, technical data, equipment, materials, or hardware;
  • International shipments or hand-carrying of items, equipment, materials, software, or technology that require export control review;
  • Projects involving military, defense, space, nuclear, encryption, controlled biological, or other export-controlled technologies;
  • Sponsor-imposed publication, participation, access, or dissemination restrictions that create export control considerations;
  • International travel involving export-controlled equipment, software, technology, technical data, or materials;
  • Technology Control Plans or other project-specific export control requirements; or
  • Other activities identified by the Export Control Officer as requiring export controls training.

The Export Control Officer will determine whether export controls training is required and whether additional or project-specific training must be completed.

How to Complete Training

To complete export controls training through CITI:

  • Visit the CITI Program website.
  • Register for an account, or log in if you already have one.
  • Affiliate your account with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
  • Add a course and select the Export Controls training option.
  • Complete the required export controls course and any additional modules assigned by the Export Control Officer.
